A City-wide Church with a World-wide Ministry

Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church is a vibrant, historic faith community of nearly 2,000 members that welcomes all and provides ministries for all ages and all walks of life. We are the birthplace of Lutheranism in Nebraska. We are a “City-wide Church with a World-wide Ministry” and have been worshipping, growing, and serving in the heart of Downtown Omaha for over 150 years!

While Kountze is among the largest ELCA churches in Nebraska, it maintains a family-like atmosphere. Our members come from all over the city and surrounding communities. Whether you are a member of long-standing, looking for a new church home, or visiting family and friends, Kountze provides a welcoming community to everyone.

Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church is a congregation in the Nebraska Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA).

The Easter Vigil is the “queen of all liturgies,” reflecting in itself the majesty, reverence, and joy of the drama of human salvation won by the unconditional love and grace poured out by the Triune God.

At the heart of the Good Friday liturgy is the passion according to John, which proclaims Jesus as a triumphant king who reigns from the cross. The ancient title for this day—the triumph of the cross—reminds us that the church gathers not to mourn this day but to celebrate Christ's life-giving passion and to find strength and hope in the tree of life. In the ancient bidding prayer we offer petitions for all the world for whom Christ died. Today's liturgy culminates in the Easter Vigil held the next evening.
